Predictions for 2020 and Beyond

1. Expansion, growth and opportunity

For those with aspirations to lead, perform, achieve more, be more – now is your time. This opportunity for growth is here now, especially in the first half of the decade. Around mid-decade this pendulum will begin to swing back the other way, if you want movement, start now.

If this is what you desire, invest in yourself. Don’t wait for the company to take care of you. Your development is up to you.

To begin the process evaluate: what do you want for your future? How much success do you want? Given your answers to those questions, what do you need to learn? What skillsets are you missing? Who do you need to hire to help you?

2.  Continued pressure for organizational output 

Especially for those who lead, the emphasis on end-result variables will continue and even grow in strength. Because of this the human side of enterprise will continue to take a back seat. When one outcome is the focus, another will weaken.

Your best response? Take responsibility for your own growth, start looking for a coach. Learn to ask for help this year. Your company has been transparent about their goals and metrics, it is time we stopped acting surprised

3.  Political and social polarization continues 

Current trends will remain the same (at least for awhile) and the use of tension as a tool will double down. Empathy as a result will follow it’s current downward trend. Daily interactions and communication will become even less civil and personal calm will need to emerge as the antidote. 

To combat this atmosphere, get clear on your values and set hard personal boundaries. By doing so you increase your ability to preserve your empathy and gratitude. 

As polarization continues, get clear on where you stand. You may be required to stand up for what you believe in and speak up for what you are willing to endure. 

Additionally, invest in your own personal calm now and safeguard your mental and physical stamina.

4. Talent Exodus 

With the baby boomer generation exiting the workforce in the next decade there will be a large exodus of talent and organizational memory. “Ok boomer” will become “Ok millennial, show us what you got”. The pivotal gaps in experience and development will become apparent. Is your leadership pipeline ready?

It will be essential to identify, assess, and develop your talent pool – now. Invest now more than ever in coaching and talent development for your people. It is important to ask, will your current practice cause you to lose ground as this inevitable transition happens?

5.  Mid-decade “awakening” – A new “leader of the future” must emerge

The shift form leader as “knower” to “learner” will finally be accepted. Leader as pioneer will be the new wave. New methods will be needed. The soul of the company is at stake, is yours too?

Employees have more choices than ever about their work. Instead of a singular focus on ROI and the bottom line, a more broad focus on employee experience and VOI will determine the success and direction of your organization. 

This awakening will take place as a new generation of leaders takes over and balancing empathy over ego is key. Admitting what you don’t know will more widely be common place as new dynamics are at play.

Leading takes energy. You must invest in it and guard it, or lose it. As the decade continues, pay attention to your needs.

Promoting wellbeing both within the organization and the surrounding community is a solution for the longevity. If you want to recruit and retain the best talent for your organization this is key. Employees not only want to feel valued but they want to work for an organization who has and lives their values – and ones that align with their own. 

Toxic environments will hit a breaking point. People are leaving organizations because of this now. Change will take courage from leadership. Create an environment where relationships with people are given high value and you will create a place where people are proud to work.
